01 / TEST

Start with an assessment.

  • Pain when chewing or opening your mouth
  • Clenching, grinding or morning jaw fatigue
  • Jaw discomfort alongside neck or facial tension

Tell us when the symptoms began, which movements hurt and whether your jaw catches or locks. We examine jaw opening, chewing muscles and neck movement, and review existing dental or medical reports. Not all facial pain comes from a jaw joint; further dental or medical assessment may be needed.

02 / TREAT · TRAIN · TRACK

Care, movement and follow-up.

The plan follows the examination. It may include acupuncture or electroacupuncture for relevant muscle tension, Chuna manual therapy when appropriate, and guidance for jaw movement, neck posture or clenching habits. Scalp acupuncture (needling of the scalp) or gentle craniosacral manual contact may be considered individually. We review pain, jaw opening, sleep and daily function over time alongside existing dental care.

Your care and precautions.

The US National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) describes the evidence for acupuncture in temporomandibular disorders as limited. We discuss whether it fits your care, with individual goals and follow-up.

Care is selected after examination and reviewed with you. Research on condition-specific benefits of craniosacral therapy remains limited. Needling can cause soreness, bleeding, bruising and rarely infection; tell us about medication, bleeding problems and allergies before treatment.

03 / PREPARE

Before your appointment.

If available, bring previous dental assessments or imaging, a medication list, and notes on painful movements or clenching. If you use a dental appliance, tell the doctor about it. Do not change an existing prescription or appliance on your own.

Questions before you visit.

Does a clicking jaw always need treatment?

Painless clicking alone is common and often needs no treatment. Pain, locking or difficulty opening the mouth is a reason to seek assessment. TMJ names the joint; TMD refers to disorders involving the jaw joint or related muscles.

Can acupuncture replace dental care?

The appropriate care depends on the cause of the pain. We review your dental history and may recommend a dentist or another medical service when needed. A suspected tooth or bite-related problem is assessed with the appropriate dental service.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no fixed course for every jaw complaint. After examination, we discuss the initial plan and reassess pain, jaw movement and everyday function before deciding on further care.
